When it comes to romantic getaways, I think you’d be pretty hard pushed to beat Caribbean holidays. After all, how much more perfect can you get than paradise-like scenery, great weather and gorgeous food? That said, I think there are a couple of islands that really stand out – and you can find out more about them below.
If you’re into your beach holidays, St Lucia is pretty much the ideal place for an intimate getaway. The real beauty of coming here is that, while you’ll definitely be spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches, you’ll also have loads of other great things to see and do.
In fact, St Lucia’s a real gem when it comes to natural wonders, with the most famous being the Pitons. These are twin volcanic peaks that look like they rise directly out of the water – and they really do make for an incredible romantic backdrop to sunset strolls along the beach.
Speaking of sunset strolls, if this kind of thing takes your fancy, make sure you visit Reduit Beach. This is actually one of the most popular beaches on the island, but thanks to its lovely scenery and great atmosphere, it is also easily one of its most romantic spots too. As well as going for a walk, I recommend taking a tranquil dip as a romantic start to the morning.
Another place well worth a visit is Diamond Waterfall, which you’ll find in the Botanic Garden. As you’d expect, it’s a really pretty sight, but it’s by no means your average waterfall. In fact, coming here gives you the chance to add a real slice of magic to your getaway, since the water changes colour throughout the day.
Of course, not all of us have the same idea of what makes a holiday romantic. If having adventures is more your thing, St Lucia is still a great destination to head to. For instance, you can find some awesome scuba diving opportunities at the Jalousie or Anse Chastanet beaches, go kitesurfing at Cas en Bas or zipline through the rainforest at Treetop Adventure Park.
If you fancy the idea of escaping to a really secluded paradise, it’s well worth considering heading to Tobago. Perhaps one of the best places to experience that laidback Caribbean lifestyle, it is a destination well known for offering simple and relaxing holidays.
In fact, I reckon one of the best things about coming here is the level of seclusion you get, which is perfect if you want an intimate holiday. A lot of the beaches here are nigh on deserted, and they’re some of the most beautiful you’re ever likely to come across, fringed by scenic coconut trees; Pigeon Beach is particularly popular.
Should you decide to head off on an adventure one day to discover a few of the lesser-known beaches, it’s worth bearing in mind that the island is fringed by two bodies of water, and the kind of beach you’ll find will depend on which it’s situated on. Those on the Caribbean Sea, for example, tend to be a lot calmer and have white sand; beaches on the Atlantic, meanwhile, generally have darker, volcanic sand and rougher water.
If you can bear to drag yourself away from the sand, you should definitely try snorkelling or scuba diving, since the waters here are just so rich in marine life. Buccoo Reef, a protected marine park, is one of the best spots. Should you and your partner not feel like getting into the water itself, you can take glass-bottomed boat rides here instead.
