High Rolling Getaways

If your money is burning a hole in your pocket, it may be time to try your luck on one of these casino getaways that will have you living like a high roller. This is a look at the world’s best places to go gambling.

America’s most famous high roller city is, of course, Las Vegas. This is the place for glitz, glam and gambling. The city saw its first boom during the construction of the Hoover Dam, when mafia crime lords and local businesses opened up casinos and showgirl theatres to entertain the largely male population. Since then the business has been booming and now luxury hotels and fabulous casinos line the strip. For over the top indulgence, hit the Bellagio – a Las Vegas icon with fantastic views and a hopping game floor. The MGM Grand is one of the world’s most recognizable hotels, with its roaring lions flanking the entrance, and it has a more spacious gaming floor than other establishments (this is important for anyone who is usually overwhelmed by the crush of casino-goers).

Las Vega’s lesser known cousin, Atlantic City, has gained notoriety recently as the setting for HBO’s hit Boardwalk Empire. This freewheeling, east coast town is famous for its historic boardwalk architecture and old school charm. The casinos here are less luxury and more flash, as you’ll see at the Taj Mahal with it’s well reviewed poker room and fabulous Chairman Tower guestrooms. The best buffet can be found at the Borgata (also home to Bobby Flay steak, not to be missed!), but Harrah’s has the best casino pool. Check out Caesar’s casino in the middle of the scenic boardwalk and take in some hilarity at the Comedy Stop.

Monte-Carlo, Monaco is the casino hotspot for the world’s wealthy and well-heeled – if you want to play the back rooms you’ll need a jacket and tie. See the casino that started it all: the Casino de Monte-Carlo. Inaugurated in 1863, this palace-style casino is a picture of elegance with rooms (excuse, “salons”) dedicated to European games, American games (black jack) and an Atrium for slot machines. So pack your pretentions and enjoy 19th century high class European gaming.

For an exotic gaming experience you might like to try the South China territory of Macau. This former Portuguese colony has become economically successful almost exclusively through tourism and gaming. For an upscale gambling experience, go to the Mandarin Oriental for the 24 hour casino.
